Monsoon likely to enter Odisha within a week: MeT

BHUBANESWAR: The south-west monsoon is likely to enter into Odisha within a week, a senior MeT official said on Sunday.

The monsoon rains which arrived in Kerala on June 8 after a week’s delay, normally hits Odisha around June 10.

“The conditions are now favourable for advancement of the south-west monsoon towards Odisha. The state is likely to witness the onset of monsoon within a week,” Director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, H R Biswas said.

While southwest monsoon’s Arabian Sea branch supports the advancement of Bay of Bengal branch, cyclone Vayu had weakened the advancement of monsoon towards other parts of the country, he said.

Noting that a low-pressure area is likely to build over north Bay of Bengal in next few days, Biswas said the system help in advancement of monsoon.

Some parts of Odisha are now experiencing rainfall and thunderstorm activities which are likely to continue for the next two days, a MeT official said.

Thunderstorm activities are now triggered by a northwest-southeast trough, which runs from northwest Bihar to Gangetic West Bengal across Jharkhand and extends up to 3.1 km above the mean sea level, he said.
